Initially trained in horticulture then studied to be a herbalist and naturopath at the Southern Cross Herbal School.

Has completed a major in plant biology from the University of New England, cultivated organic herbs and learned the art of distillation of lavender, eucalyptus and other aromatic herbs.

Operated a natural therapist practice for 18 years in the Hunter Valley.

Currently a full time lecturer at the University of Newcastle and conducting a PhD research project investigating the activity of traditional medicines.

A well-known lecturer on many aspects of medicinal herbs and authored the classic reference text “The Constituents of Medicinal Plants”, which is now in its 2nd edition.

A fellow of the National Herbalists Association of Australia having served many years as executive director and vice-president.

Member of the International Society for Ethnopharmacology, the Phytochemical Society of Europe, and Australian Plant Conservation Network.
